In January of 2006, Jack Jackson
was asked to go to the local St. Margaret of Scotland School
to assist an exchange teacher ( from Scotland) to run a Burns Celebration
for the pupils.
The children had been taught the Selkirk Grace and the Address to the Haggis
by the teacher
and shared the verses as the Haggis was piped in.
Afterwards, most of the School took part in some Scottish Country dancing
in the Gymnasium,
under the tutelage of Dr. David Murray , who had also volunteered to assist.
Jack did all the piping and the Children and Staff enjoyed the day.
A couple of weeks later when the names of the major pupils who took part were
sent to him,
Jack returned and presented a 'Certificate of Proficiency in Burns poetry'
to the group.
A lasting impression must have been made, as Jack was asked by the Pricipal
to come back again this year ( 2008),
although the Scottish teacher had returned home. This time a sizeable group
had assembled in the Library,
to listen to a talk on Robert Burns' life and work, and hear some Pipe Music.
This latter attracted the junior Grades who wanted to come down and listen
so the
whole School eventually ended up in the Library area !
